One thing that is talked about in both the reading and the video is the rules in football. In the reading, A Variety of Religious Experience, it talks about how the rules are " universal, transparent, and legitimate". This means that the rules are easy to understand and are the same all around. The video, Football High, talks about how there should be no rules against when they can practice, no matter how hot, or how there are no rules for safe tackling. The rules have been the same in football since the game has been created. They have made some small changes, but that is about it. The rules they need to be changing they are ignoring.
Another topic they talked about in the reading and video is transportation. In the reading, transportation was a necessity in order to play the game. You would not have enough players if you did not use transportation. This also means that the rules would have to be exactly the same for both teams in order for them to play each other. In the video, transportation is used for them to play bigger and better teams. Not all of the best teams are going to be right around them so they need to travel farther to have better competition. This has stayed the same from in the past because the same goes for both.

Haha it seems like we all understand the rules and transportation theme. You are totally right though!! The rules that need to be universal/changed are being ignored e.i practicing in extreme heat. That's crazy that there isn't a rule set to protect high schoolers from that kind of torture. I prayyyy my kid NEVER wants to play football because I'm shutting that idea down lol. Like "Son... let's try basketball instead" #NotAllowingFootballsInMyHouse
ReplyDeleteAlso, some important ways of transportation have been added since the Industrial Revolution! Teams travel by planes now or cool charter buses. They also have ambulances which, in a sense, is no different than a car; BUT they do have medical equipment to try and keep them alive on the way to the hospital lol.
I agree with you when you said that the rules that should be changing are the ones that they are ignoring. Practicing in extreme heat is so dangerous and it seems crazy to me that there have been no rule changes so far. As mentioned in the video, most teams don't have an athletic trainer who is present, so when serious injuries like heat stroke happen professionals aren't there to help. Also you brought up safe tackling and that is another rule that should have enforced rules. That video we watched in class about the kid from Iowa who died from CTE is a prime example and there are many other football players who have gone through it.
