There are many motivations from the reading "Why We Play". One motivation that I found is "...video games may teach the realities of way, both political and human, but even where no such lessons are offered, video games require problem-solving and good strategic thinking." This relates to the video with Jane McGonigal in many ways. One way that I thought of was when she talks about the 10,000 hours of practice. You can master whatever skill that you practice for that many hours. I realize that playing a video game and being in war first hand is different, but if someone who played "war" video games actually went into combat they could use some of the skills that they used in the game in real life. You need problem-solving skills and strategic thinking when in combat.

Another motivation that I found is the biological motivation. It states in the reading, "...biological motivations include eating, sleeping, sex, procreation, as well as self-preservation." Jane McGonigal talks in the video about how a group of people got through a famine by playing games one day and eating the next. They were so involved in the games that they didn't think about how they were hungry that day. They survived 18 years without eating every day which is unheard of. Games distract us from the real world so much that a whole group of people lasted 18 years eating every other day by playing games.

  1. Hi Emma, I like how you compared war video games and real combat. I think your right about the usage of problem-solving skills and strategic thinking. It's all about the mentality you gain from a game and the transferable skills that can be applicable to real world scenarios.

  2. Hello Emma! I think it is super interesting, yet crazy how games can distract someone so much that they forget about basic human needs such as eating and sleeping. Being 19 years old, it's fascinating to me that people were able to survive 18 years eating every other day, just because of playing games. I couldn't imagine going practically my entire life eating every other day!
