In Secret Ink, there are many ways that you can tell there are ways that people accept tattoos and many ways that they don't. We know that our culture accepts tattoos because it as seen now as a form of expression. The media shows celebrities tattoos all of the time and it is seen as "normal" no one ever says anything about their tattoos. As told in the reading, "The tattoo has "undergone dramatic redefinition" and has shifted from a form of deviance to an acceptable form of expression".

Our culture also shows that they do not accept tattoos in other cases because of the fact that you have to hide them at some jobs. They are seen as "unprofessional" and need to be covered in some circumstances. The younger generation is getting tattoos in places that are easy to hide if need be because of this. They have also been said that mental health professionals have "rob[bed] tattooees of their agency while negatively portraying tattoos as self-harm".

  1. Artists are always seen in a positive aspect whenever they embrace their tattoos and or decide to make them an emblem for their beliefs. But, whenever a regular individual gets a tattoo in a notorious place o their bodies, they are judged and even discriminated by society.

  2. One of the biggest mixed messages with tattoos is the fact that many people consider it self-expression, yet are not allowed to be seen having any in the workplace. Our society still fears tattoo culture even though it is "no longer deviant." You made a good point that most celebrities are never criticized for their tattoos in the media, although in reality it seems like there can still be a big controversy.
